FREELANCE JOURNALIST – PATERNAL DEPRESSION

I received an interesting question about the links between alcohol consumption, substance misuse and marital violence and paternal depression.  Although there is anecdotal evidence – fathers talking with Mark and myself – there appears very little in the literature.  I have spent several hours – about 20 in all, searching through research papers.  Although there is stuff on depression and alcohol, teenagers and substance misuse, there was hardly any definitive proof which answered the question.  However, that does not mean it isn’t true as Paternal Depression is a relatively new area of investigation and we are aware that men are not always forthcoming about their mental health, let alone to explain their coping strategies. However, I sent off the relevant information and hope that this will help with the article and prompt folk to take paternal depression seriously and to understand the influence it has on the family and relations.
